		<description>On Josaphat's Ground


The Friche Josaphat is Brussels' last great ruggedness. Located in the North of the city, between Schaarbeek and Evere, this old marshalling yard of 24 hectares awaits its planned urban development. Meanwhile nature has reclaimed its place. Josaphat is a field of astonishment for nature lovers as well as a place to come together to explore and practice alternative ways of living in the city.

Over the past few years, citizens, associations and civil society have joined forces to raise awareness about the risks to the area due to rapid urbanization and the consequent loss of biodiversity. Following the campaign #PlanBJosaphat – which calls for the suspension of the urban development for the area – several civic associations, architects, and naturalists have proposed alternative plans to preserve the natural heritage of the area summarized in a manifesto. An online petition that reached over 15,000 signatures was also promoted, as well as numerous outreach initiatives that fueled debate about the future of the area.

	Images of people and urban transition spaces. Imaginaries of altering ways of living.&#38;nbsp;Hands-on and pragmatically constructed.

As an embedded witness and part of an ever-shifting community, Toha De Brant brings out representations of the multi-faced temporary use scene in Brussels and its connections beyond.

Intimate and exposing, this series of photos highlight the visual manifestation of an ever-moving urban scenery that might disappear and last. Messy architectures, turbulent and caring characters and subtly outstanding details reveal an inadmissible overlap between people and their places.  
The results are -like its subject- images that have been worked by hand and manifested through a professional devotion. Carefully selected shots that confuse in their layerdness of meaning and understanding, an overlap between people and places we tend to separate. 

This series reveals the often-left unseen core of committed impermanent existences in a society that plans for an imagined permanency.

	x.haleis a visual and architectural art collective that creates interventions in public space. As a trio, Toha De Brant, Hanne Van Reusel and Sigried Kellens strive for a more authentic relationship with the urban living environment and its never-ending transition processes. To this end, x.hale focuses on constructively critical and activist interventions that depict the experience of a space and thus engage in debate through co-creation and production. The everyday experience of the space is central and the blueprint technique is used to realise a shared creative expression.

	
	Stilstand 
is a project through which we increase the contrast between 'space for stationary traffic' and 'space for standing still': we make it directly tangible to the general public. We do this through a co-created artistic installation that literally colours the parvis on car-free Sunday in Brussels. We actively invite citizens to realise this installation with us (participation through co-production). For the artistic concept of the installation, we use the analogue blueprint technique (cyanotype). This visual technique is used as a means to bring the Brussels citizen in touch with the power that a space that Stilstand offers.

	Josaph’Aire Ouvre Son Parvis is a project through wich&#38;nbsp; we offer an accessible cultural activity for the neighbourhood. The project starts from a temporary intervention that aims to have a lasting impact in the space and awareness of its users through a participatory workshop and artistic installation. By organising the workshop and placing the installation at the entrance of the site, we not only highlight a hidden green space but also transform the current rest car park into an open-air studio and exhibition space.

	Bours aux plantes sauvages&#38;nbsp;is an exhibition of Stilstand at the alternative plant fair organised by Natagora to raise awarenes on native plants from Belgium.&#38;nbsp; For more than 30 years, Natagora has been organising an exchange of native and wild plants to help amateur gardeners promote biodiversity in their space. Indeed, even if some non-native plants from Belgium feed insects and birds, nothing beats a plant from Belgium, adapted to the climate and able to reproduce itself. &#38;nbsp;However, these plants are often difficult to find in nurseries because they are less aesthetic (according to the standard) than horticultural plants. By organising this event, the Natagora Nature Network hopes to offer a helping hand to anyone who wants to design their garden in the best possible way.
